Why India is falling in love with Aussie lamb and mutton
It’s official – Australian lamb and mutton are the new darlings of kitchens and food stands right across India, with industry data showing that Australia has to become the top exporter of frozen and chilled sheep meat to the country in 2024.
The value of these exports to India increased by 85% in 2024, and has grown by more than 800% since 2022.
Why? We all know that Australian red meat is second-to-none when it comes to quality, freshness and consistency. But you might be surprised to learn that Australian producers are offering up to 14 different cuts to meet the diverse needs of Indian chefs and consumers, whereas some of our international competitors often offer only two or three.
It’s a testament to the hard work and innovation of our processors in close collaboration with their Indian customers. And it’s great news for anyone working in one of the 189,000 jobs supported by red meat processing in Australia, as well as the towns and small businesses that rely on the industry.
You won’t find a better reason to celebrate this week with an authentic Indian curry made with Australian meat.
